Winter Stars (2007)

Cynthia NovakThe longest night, the Winter Solstice, is behind us. The air is frosty cold; every creature that lives outdoors is hungry and needs to eat. They instinctively know it’s time to fuel up and the environment stimulates their metabolisms. We humans need to figure out a way to burn what we stored over the holidays!

Let’s start with the December 20th New Moon and move forward. We can’t charge into the new year without carrying a little holiday weight along. These are intense times. We are at once threatened by a fiercely tribal form of militant Islam that harkens back to the dark ages; and, at the same time, we are offered the limitless awakenings of quantum physics! We slip down the Rabbit Hole, only this time it is the black hole at the center of the Milky Way, the Galactic Center, and, perhaps, the very womb of our galaxy.

The visible planets are dancing together in different constellations until mid-March. From late December’s New Moon, the Winter Solstice, until the New Moon of February 17th, they gather with the Sun and Moon, and linger in a constellation with one of the slower moving, outer planets for a full month. Starting in late December, they join Pluto, the planet of transformation and rebirth. Interestingly, they gather across the center of the Milky Way. Mayan scholars say that this is the place the ancient Mayan culture saw as a Stargate, or portal, for universal, galactic knowledge. In January the faster planets visit Neptune: the mystical planet of dreams and visionary ability. Finally, in February, they visit Uranus, the restless technocrat of the heavens. He’s known for surprises and unpredictable events of all kinds. So this winter we stand both literally and symbolically at the gateway to the past and the future. Will we dance with Kali and create from destruction or will we reach for quantum physics and metaphysics to find a modern world solution to ancient tribal wars? On some level, we each get to choose with our conscious minds, hearts and words.

During the Winter Solstice on December 20th there is a New Moon or new beginning. The Sun, Moon, and Pluto are in tight union in the heavens. The place they meet is called Mula, (Foundation), in Vedic astrology: It is the center of the galaxy. Ancient Hindu astrologers associated this place with a deity called Nirritti: she later became known as Kali. Kali is a fierce creator and destroyer. She dances a wild dance to destroy our illusions. She shows us the painful reality of mortal life and the beauty and sublime pleasure that is part of life in a body on this earth. It is a place where we learn to dissolve our attachments to the material world in one way or another. This place was also known to the ancient Mayans as a portal to human consciousness. Thus, we are at the edge of the Rabbit Hole in “What the Bleep-Down the Rabbit Hole”. Pluto and the visible planets gather at this place in the heavens known as the birth canal to the Otherworld.

Interestingly, astrophysicists discovered in modern times that the place the ancients called the center of the galaxy is indeed a large black hole at the very center of the Milky Way. There is a great deal of supernovae activity there now, but perhaps there is something richer and maybe we are at the crossroads. Will we focus on warring tribes who win and lose at each battle? Do we see the Creator as a punitive deity or as an awakened consciousness? Will we leap forward or fall backward from fear? This sounds at once both exciting and ominous. As in the birth of anyone or anything it is daunting and exciting. For now, it is helpful to note that we have a choice in how we dissolve our attachments: through the primal dance of blood or the awakening of consciousness. Is this the beginning of the end of the Mayan calendar or is it the beginning of a new level of awareness? Wherever we turn, there are tribes: does ultimate protection come from joining one or from creating something greater? Do we have the awareness to reach beyond the comfort of the past? Do we dare dive into the Rabbit Hole?

We start the New Year with the knowledge that life is precious, painful and pleasurable. There is profound suffering and sublime joy. We also know that there are vocal groups calling for destruction and who believe that they will give birth to something better. Before we begin 2007, we reflect on the wars and threats and destruction of the recent past. We marvel that the ancients “saw” what modern science has now confirmed and we ponder the future. As we end the year, there are mixed images of celebration and suffering. We realize that creation and destruction walk hand in hand today, as well as in the past; each of us has the opportunity to reach deep inside and look at the Kali within. What destruction and creation are you capable of? What would you fight for or against? Who would you give up your life for? Will you dare to take a stand even if it upsets the tribe?

If you find yourself feeling just a little vulnerable and perhaps a little heavy with the pounds left from the holiday feast and if you are a bit daunted by the weight of responsibility from bills or work or family or life, then you are not alone. This is the time to focus on creation. We have the gift of life, a body, a mind and the possibility to awaken our consciousness. We can travel down the Rabbit Hole and explore what we know or thought we knew.

January begins the year on a heavy note. Physical and financial fears abound as Mars, the planet of war, joins Pluto. This is a particularly volatile transit and economic fears become loud shouts. As noted above, Pluto lingers in the mansion governed by Kali. We are pushed and pulled to find a way to create and step outside of the real fears of life. Mars crosses Pluto on the 13th. This may be a time for fears, threats and posturing at all levels. You’ll want to avoid petty dramas and keep meetings simple and direct. It’s easy to listen to mental chatter and presume that you have the facts when what you have are your feelings. This is a fast-moving transit so things should calm down within a week. If you need to apologize, do so and move on.

The January New Moon is the fresh start we’ve been waiting for. There is a planetary party in the heavens. On the 18th we feel lighter and brighter. There is plenty of attention to business and busy-ness. Love and money take a last fearful glance at Saturn, the truth about the budget and where we need to cut. Then we have a plan of action as a nation and as individuals. This is nothing new; we have experience and wisdom to guide us.

February is most interesting for relationships. Venus, the planet of love and money, crosses Uranus, the playful, trickster planet. Uranus governs technology so on-line romance is strong as we enter this month. The period of time from the 5th until the 14th is most volatile. Venus might be a little fickle or perhaps confused as she pulls into the eclipse path. Is it destiny or desire? Take a few days before you go too far. Remember, Venus governs love and money, so introduce him to your mother and get the advice of a solid financial person before you invest your heart or your nest egg.

This combination makes us all a little susceptible to fashion and should be a boon for the beauty industry. On the 13th, just in time for Valentine’s Day, Mercury, the communication planet, appears to stop in the heavens and go backward. This is good for mis-communication and missed appointments. Better verify your plans and your assumptions before you take the wrong turn. This should find plenty of lovers snapping up last-minute cards and flowers. If your sweetie forgets, give him the benefit of the doubt. Better yet, be the one to buy the flowers or make the dinner this year. That will be a pleasant surprise and a wonderful way to combine love, surprises and a shift in the paradigm. It could send him thinking about surprises, too! The February New Moon on the 17th is strong for business: it’s easier to get down to work and complete what you start.

March: Things flow pretty well during the first half of the month, then they get sticky. Mars, the action planet and the planet of war, opposes Saturn, the planet of frustration. This is symbolic of struggles with authority or those in power. Mars says: “Let’s do it my way now!” Saturn says: “We need to follow protocol; there is a system to all things and order is our friend”. Put these two together and we experience a sort of internal tug of war and perhaps an external reaction. If this weren’t enough, these two planets, who are not friends, move into a cosmic dance with Neptune, the planet of faith and illusion. The best of this would be the realization that war does not create order, but disorder. Our faith in the future must begin with our imaginations and, ultimately, relies upon faith in each other. The darker side of this is over-reaction to fear that our faith is questioned and force is the only way. I don’t know about you, but I’ll vote my visionary vote on the former. This is evidenced in all arenas of life, right down to our families. By the time we reach the March New Moon, we are ready for a different perspective and it is here!

In the News: The election brought about changes in the House and Senate. The Democrats are the majority party in both, but it is a slim majority, so the two parties will have to work together at solutions. This is a great time for a more enlightened, bipartisan approach. It’s an opportunity for both parties to step away from tribal rhetoric and pull together for a visionary solution to the nation’s big problems. Do you think they can do it? Will you wish them good will?

GWB: The president has run out of lucky transits. As he enters 2007 there are big changes already and more to come in his Cabinet. He is tired, but tenacious. Although we can expect to see him adapt to the current political climate, he will often feel alone or abandoned during this year. He has the type of transit an astrologer expects to see when someone is grieving. The nation will charge ahead. The gift of a Democracy is its ability to change with the people. We the People are part of the process and our vision is part of the solution.

Nancy Pelosi: The first woman Speaker of the House has a powerful Jupiter. Jupiter is strong in the charts of many politicians, but hers is unusually strong in the lunar mansion Revati. This mansion is sensitive and contemplative, but most of all it has a quality of empathy. Her Jupiter falls in the eclipse path on Ketu, the point where the Moon descends as it circles the Earth. It is an indication of destiny, as well as hard-won political clout. Pelosi has Venus, the feminine planet of love and money, right next to Uranus, the planet of change. She is changeable and a vehicle for change. She has been the voice of her constituents in San Francisco, but will now shift a bit as she becomes the voice of Americans nation-wide. Power won’t be handed to her easily, but I suspect she’ll win it gracefully. I intend to give her the opportunity.

Mercury is the planet of communication; expect to see her style of communication evolve dramatically as Uranus in the heavens comes to sit on her Mercury in 2007. It is in stressful aspect to Robert Gates’ Mars (see below), so word of these two being at odds will surface. More than anything, she is sensitive to the needs of her party and the nation. Although this combination may lead her to blurt things out like toads leaping into a pond, in time she will become more cautious. Her Venus is pretty and charismatic; it sits next to Mars in the heavens in her birth chart. Make no mistake- this woman is tough. Which mansion do they fall in? Krittika, the razor, which offers the ability to cut through the fecal matter to find what lies below. This mansion holds the Pleiades whose myth is a group of selfless sisters who face severe criticism and are even shunned. They take it all in stride as they come together to give birth to a being, who will save the world from evil. Pelosi will be a fascinating person to watch in the coming years, especially in 2007 as she evolves before our eyes.

Robert Gates, The Secretary of Defense, has a very interesting birth chart. Mars is the planet of war and it is near Uranus, the planet of change and unexpected events. Interesting, some of the most adversarial players in militant Islam have aspects of Mars to his Mars; this man is a strong leader and a fierce opponent. However, beyond that, he is a communicator and a negotiator.

Gates is part of the changes in Washington. He is very smart and analytical. Mercury, the planet of communication and commerce, sat right next to his Sun when he was born. His memory is phenomenal and his acumen for business is, too. Even more interesting is the planet Neptune right next to them. Neptune deals with secrets (He was former head of the CIA), but it is also charming! Think Bill Clinton, with Neptune prominent. No, Gates doesn’t have his tied with romance, but the charm and capacity to appeal to many different types of people should be there. With Neptune so close to the Sun, Gates may appear humble or he may literally be humble (I’m not sure which), but it is likely a combination of both. Mercury added to the mix gives him an amazing ability to communicate with many varied people. He wants to be heard and will be willing to listen and find a way to reach others.

Jupiter is the planet of religion, beliefs and optimism. His Jupiter is very strong and should give him plenty of enthusiasm for the difficult task. It is in the eclipse path so this is part of his destiny. Saturn is the cosmic task-master: as Gates accepted the Cabinet position, Saturn had just crossed over his Jupiter. My guess is that he was prepped in September. In the spring of 2007, Jupiter will throw his energy onto Gates’ natal Jupiter, while Saturn lingers upon it. March should usher in the biggest, most difficult work of his life. He is definitely part of the changes. I have high hopes for his success and diplomacy. We should see some of both very early in the year, perhaps even as early as December 2006.

The President of Iran; Nasrullah, the leader of Hezbollah; Secretary of Defense, Gates; and GWB face the most intense and volatile transits. We’ve seen Hezbollah’s demand to overthrow the Lebanese government. In late December and January, Nasrullah becomes even more vocal and optimistic about his success. This will be difficult for Israel and the US. Even more volatile is the situation with Iran. I believe the US will take a strong stand with Iran in 2007. It may start as early as January, but the Iranian leader’s chart is more volatile and impatient in March and remains combustible all year. It may manifest as a physical and not merely a verbal threat to Israel and to the US. It is interesting to see the leaders have Mars facing each other. GWB’s Mars is now more humbled by the election, but the President of Iran has had no such humility and so this transit is even more daring than one might expect. Defense Secretary Gates had Mars triggered as well. Starting in March, Uranus the technology planet, crosses the President of Iran’s Mars. This could manifest as another plot to use technology similar to the one in London that was discovered and foiled. That was the last time Uranus crossed this place. Let’s come together and ask for light and hope to enter the world stage. Let us pull on all the tools we learned from the film “What the Bleep-Down the Rabbit Hole” and lend our part to liberation.

Love and Money will grow, but they need to be tended carefully this Winter. Finances are strained in January and in March. This will likely appear in the market and, as we have seen, already shows in the Dollar. However, this is not the first time the nation faced this type of belt tightening. It’s the nature of business to get busy. I expect to see creative ventures, but cautious funding. I’m no financial or love adviser, but I do see a bit of a roller coaster ride this winter. Those with patience and compassion will feel rich in both areas, while those living in fear will feel loss when there is none.

Eat Like a Chimpanzee: Review of Green for Life

Victoria Boutenko and her family were plagued with numerous health problems. In poor health his whole life, her husband Igor had progressive hyperthyroidism and chronic rheumatoid arthritis. Mainstream medicine had no answers for Igor. Victoria weighed 280 pounds and was constantly tired and depressed. Her daughter had asthma and allergies and her son had juvenile diabletes.

Victoria decided that they need to do something different to get different results, so she studied nutrition and she put the whole family on a raw food diet. They saw their health improve dramatically. In only four months the Boutenko’s ran the “Bolder Boulder” 10K race! The Boutenko’s enjoyed the healthful benefits of a raw food diet for seven years–weight control, increased energy, clearer thinking and loss of food craving. After seven years, however, their cravings for junk foods started to return, and their health level seemed to plateau.

Victoria continued her research and uncovered the shortcomings of a raw diet–the lack of green plants and blossoms. She discovered that chimpanzees, who share 99% of our DNA, get many of their nutrients and essential amino acids (proteins) from greens. Chimpanzees have a very low incidence of cancers and other debilitating diseases that are common in humans. Here in the south, grandmother encouraged us to “eat our greens”. Today, greens are now found as garnish for our meat and potatoes world. Obesity, chronic constipation, and a host of other “modern world” illnesses plague Americans. Is it any wonder, when our daily intake of natural, unprocessed foods is almost zero? The average chimpanzee eats 300 grams of fiber a day. Fiber acts like a broom to sweep out toxins in the body. The recommended level of fiber in the American diet? 20 to 30 grams. The average level? Less than 15 grams.

Green for Life by Victoria Boutenko, documents the discovery of her green-based diet. Filled with nutritional research comparisions, charts, testimonials, and recipes, this paperback is the essential guide to getting started on a healthful, green-filled nutritional plan for you and your family.

From the inside cover:

“Victoria has developed a series of green smoothie recipes that enable anyone to consume the necessary amount of greens in a palatable way. Victoria introduces the idea of blending, rather than juicing, as being the superior way to ingest greens, for the very necessary insoluble fiber, which is essential for healing and maintenance of our elimination systems. Also documented is a study in which a group of regular people drink a one quart green smoothie every day for a month, in addition to their regular diet. One pound of certain greens can give you your RDA of all nine essential amino acids, not to mention an abundance of vitamins and minerals.”

Fighting Eating Disorders With Chinese Medicine

Nearly 1 million men and women in the United States suffer from eating disorders, according to The National Institute of Mental Health. The two most common types of eating disorders are anorexia and bulimia. Anorexia is characterized by drastic weight loss to the point of extreme underweight. Victims will harvest a great fear of gaining weight, and an extreme inability to accept one’s own appearance. Those suffering from bulimia are characterized by binge-eating behavior, accompanied by recurrent compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain.

Prevalent in most eating disorder cases, depression and anxiety may be treated by acupuncture. In a study performed by Guo Ke Ren, 30 cases of anorexia were treated with acupuncture to specific meridians for 30 minutes; after treatments, 25 cases were resolved and 5 responded with improvement, with an effectiveness rate of 100%.. A Chinese study has also found positive results in integrating TCM into treatments for depression. Subjects have reported “significant improvements in their physical health, mental health, sense of control and social support,” after several acupuncture and body-mind treatments.

Those suffering from eating disorders typically have much lower levels of total energy, vitamins, and essential nutrients required for healthy living. In an American study, “dietary intake of calcium, iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid of anorexics were significantly lower than in normal subjects.” Supplementation of some of these vitamins and minerals may help reduce the symptoms of eating disorders and help promote a healthy lifestyle in victims of anorexia and bulimia.

  • Rhodiola has been used in folk medicine for centuries to increase the body’s natural resistance to stressors. It enhances the transport of serotonin (a feel-good chemical that promotes wellbeing in the body) to the brain, reducing depression and anxiety.
  • St. John’s Wort is a popular herbal remedy for depression, a well-published side-effect of eating disorders.
  • Kava has been used in the South Pacific and Europe as an effective for mild anxiety, muscular tension, and insomnia.
  • Eluthero ginseng is used to increase stamina and endurance, protecting the body’s systems from stress-induced illness.

Traditional Chinese Medicine can provide those with anorexia and bulimia alternative therapies to popular Western prescriptions that not only aid in recovery, but help strengthen overall vitality and health in the body and mind.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Bone Health

Ten million Americans over the age of 50 suffer from osteoporosis. In addition, 34 million are at a serious risk for developing this debilitating bone disease. The severe loss of bone mass and breakdown of the architecture of the bone, osteoporosis thins the bones to a point where a mere cough can cause a fracture. Twenty percent of those suffering with osteoporosis will die within a year after sustaining a broken hip. Within 15 years, half of all Americans over age 50 will be at risk for osteoporosis-related fractures, according to the Surgeon General.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a holistic approach to preventing and eradicating the source of bone disease. TCM theory states that “The kidneys are in charge of the bones.” Essentially, the skeleton’s growth, development, and repair are closely related to the kidneys. These organs promote the growth of marrow and flow of vital energy (qi) through the skeleton.

Post-menopausal women experience both bone loss and kidney weakness. Studies performed at the Traditional Medicine Research Institute in China have found that “the increase of bone mass in amount and density and the increase of age have a close relationship with the abundance of, or decline of, kidney qi.” Individuals suffering kidney failure will also experience lower bone density, according to the study.

The second factor that contributes to bone disease is blood flow. Blood flow and qi circulation throughout the body are directly related. Promoting blood circulation may remove such stasis and encourage the production of new bone material. Like Western medicine, TCM promotes vigorous exercise for general well-being, and weight exercises for bone strength and health. An American study concludes that athletic and active women maintain bone mass longer later in life. Further, a study at the Department of Medicine, University of British Columbia, Vancouver suggest that, “Moderate physical activity in people with osteoporosis can reduce the risk of falls and fractures, decrease pain and improve fitness and overall quality of life. It may also stimulate bone gain and decrease bone loss.”

Change Your Mind – Change your Life! : Waking Up to Hypnosis

By MaDonna J. Kettler, BA, MHt, LBLt

Long, long ago during the time of Atlantis, people used sleep and dream chambers to practice altered states of consciousness. Not so long ago, the Egyptians regularly practiced similar techniques. Mankind has consistently experimented with different ways to induce trance states in order to achieve altered states of consciousness. One of the first was Paracelsus (1493-1541), who used magnets for healing. Also in the Fifteenth Century, William Maxwell used magnets for healing as well as imagination and suggestion. He believed that these techniques enhanced the healing process. Maximillian Hell, (1720-1792), an astronomer and Jesuit Priest, healed the sick with metal plates. You may have heard of Fronz Mesmer (1734-1850), who believed there was a universal fluid within everyone’s body that emanated from the planets and stars. He called this animal magnetism. Mesmer was debunked and died in poverty, yet we still use the term mesmerism to describe an altered state. In the Eighteenth Century the term hypnosis was coined by the person often called the Father of Modern Hypnosis, James Braid (1795-1860). Hypnosis comes from the Greek word “hypnos,” which means sleep – which hypnosis is NOT!

Milton Erickson (deceased 1980), talked about hypnosis being a naturally occurring phenomenon. Ericksonian techniques include waking hypnosis, metaphor construction, direct, and indirect suggestion. These methods are still widely used.

The first hypnotists believed eye fixation (tiring of the eyes) was necessary in order to induce an altered state. Today, hypnotists may or may not use this technique in order to achieve a successful trance.

Edgar Cayce (often called the Sleeping Prophet) would enter into a profound trance state and receive information relating to a subject’s healing. It is argued whether this was a state of hypnosis, but he certainly used an applied altered state of consciousness, which is inclusive of self-hypnosis. With Cayce, the metaphysical or holistically-oriented approach to hypnosis was birthed, including the theory that we bring unconscious memories with us from past lives that can affect our current life.

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness which lies between awake and asleep. It is generally brought about in an individual by the use of a combination of concentration, relaxation, suggestion, and expectation. Watching TV, playing games, praying, and daydreaming, are all altered states of consciousness. Anyone with normal physiological and psychological functioning, therefore having the ability to concentrate and/or relax, can be hypnotized.

From my perspective, the clinical approach to hypnosis is more mind-centered and typically uses Ericksonian techniques. This approach can promote change related, but not limited to: weight release, stress reduction, pain management, smoking cessation, building self-confidence, fear release, memory retrieval, or depression.

Transpersonal Hypnosis is a practice in which the hypnotist uses a holistically oriented approach. This includes working with the mind, but also the body and spirit of the client. The client’s inner and other-dimensional resources are not only recognized but utilized in order to transcend the physical and explore the deeper aspects related to the weight, fear, memory loss, depression, or addiction issues that are challenging them. Transpersonal hypnotherapy assumes there are guides, angels, and/or deceased relatives that work with us on a regular basis in order to achieve our highest good. It sees the client as a spiritual being in a human experience, with that experience now requiring a deeper understanding or healing on some level, in order for that person to evolve mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually. I was drawn to transpersonal hypnosis because the mind approach had not worked for me.

We cannot be hypnotized if we do not desire to be hypnotized. If we do not want to quit smoking, odds are we will not quit smoking, even with self-hypnosis. Amazingly, however, I have worked with clients that were able to quit even though they said they didn’t really WANT to quit! When we intend to affect change in our lives, the hypnosis helps our unconscious, or subconscious will to match our conscious desire in order to achieve a desired outcome. When we listen to positive suggestions often enough, even though we may not consciously believe them at the onset, we train ourselves to change – slowly but surely.

When we see ourselves as spiritual beings FIRST, something happens. We believe we are worthy, we know we have purpose, and we are more able to affect change. These changes occur first within ourselves. I came from a background of seeing my Creator as someone “out there and removed from me.” I have learned much by integrating self-hypnosis, healing, meditation, and other spiritually-oriented practices into my life. I know there are absolutely no accidents. We do not make mistakes (!) … we have different experiences based on the choices we make. Something good comes out of everything. We ALL have purpose. We absolutely are NOT alone. Hypnosis has helped in my evolution and I know it can help in yours, if it feels right for you. I personally have released a lot of excess weight (as well as a TON of emotional baggage!), and now see myself and others as a Divine work in progress.

Some areas that can be enhanced or changed with directive or suggestive hypnosis include addictions, attracting abundance or love, releasing anxiety or depression, relaxed childbirth, dream interpretation, releasing fears and phobias, insomnia, increasing intuitive or psychic abilities, memory retrieval, pain management, stress reduction, self-healing, and smoking cessation. In suggestive hypnosis, a tape is created that the client listens to until the desired outcome has been achieved (usually 28+ days).

When suggestive therapy does not work, or only works to a certain level, a more advanced methodology called non-directive or regression therapy can be utilized. Regression involves taking the client to the source of the issue or block. This can be from their current life or a previous life, so belief systems can come into play. However, I have used regressive therapy with people who do not believe in past lives as they can see the memory as a metaphor instead of an actual past life experience. Does it really matter how the experience is perceived, as long as it heals the issue or releases the block? I don’t think so!

Regression therapy is generally used when there is unexplained pain or illness, relationship issues, or soul purpose definition. With an even more cutting edge methodology called life-between-lives (LBL) spiritual regression, you may experience what the ancient Tibetans called the bardo, or in-between time. Michael Newton’s books, Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls, tell of his extensive research into this vast, ever evolving realm of the superconscious. In the LBL experience you may meet your soul group, review past lives, discover why you chose your current body and life experiences, receive spiritual and physical healing, meet your guides and/or ancestors, and acquire information not usually accessed through the normal regressive trance state. I believe when in the superconscious realm, you are HOME, and if this information piques your interest, I highly encourage you to find a regressionist that facilitates both past life and life-between-lives spiritual regression. You may be amazed to discover who you REALLY are.

I hope this information has helped. If you have other questions about hypnosis or other spiritual topics, please call or email me. It’s up to you! Are you ready?

My thoughts and gratitude are with each of you. Remember to BE PEACE. Remember who you REALLY are. Know you are not alone. Breathe deeply and fully, as you become more aware of all that is around and within you.

Blessings, Peace, and Love,
MaDonna

Natural Therapies For Relieving Erectile Dysfunction

Until recently, the very mention of erectile dysfunction or impotence could bring about a blush to even the most manly of men. Embarrassing as it may be, erectile dysfunction affects more than 18 million men in America. It can vary in severity from an inability to achieve, maintain and sustain an erection, to an inability to achieve an orgasm, even though a healthy sexual desire exists. Because of the sensitive nature of this disorder, it often goes unreported.

Achieving a normal erection is a complex process. It involves psychological impulses from the brain, adequate levels of testosterone (male sex hormone), a functioning nervous system, and healthy vascular tissue of the penis. Electrical impulses from the brain, when stimulated, cause the nerves in the penis to release nitric oxide. This, in turn, increases the production of guanylate MonoPhosphate (cGMP) in the muscle cells of the corpora cavernosa (the tissue of the penis, consisting of smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, spaces, veins and arteries). The cGMP triggers the muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax and fill with blood, which causes the penis to expand.

Because of the intricate nature of the physiological processes involved, a number of different factors can interfere with a man’s ability to achieve a normal and healthy erection. The most common of these is aging. As a man gets older, his ability to produce nitric oxide decreases, thus affecting the proper functioning of the corpora cavernosa.

A number of health issues can also underscore this disorder. The most frequently seen are diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Diabetes, for example, can damage the sensory nerves in the body. In turn, individuals who suffer from hypertension exhibit low nitric oxide production. Other factors that can contribute to erectile dysfunction include cardiovascular disease, nerve or spinal cord damage, cigarette smoking, low testosterone levels, prescription medications, depression, stress and anxiety.

Until recently, it was believed that little could be done to help a man who is suffering from erectile dysfunction, but there are a number of natural alternative health remedies that can be tried before having to rely on the “little blue pill”.

Recommendations For Wellness

  • If you think your stress, anxiety or depression is affecting you physically, perhaps psychological counseling, meditation, bio-feedback or hypnotherapy can help.
  • If you are taking prescription medications such as MAO inhibitors or anti-hypertensives, talk to your doctor about their possible side effects.
  • Have your hormone levels checked. You might be suffering from low testosterone levels. In some men, low levels of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) have also been reported. DHEA is essential for the production of testosterone.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Try supplementing with the amino acid L-arginine. Nitric oxide formation depends on sufficient levels of L-arginine in the body and has been found particularly effective for men with abnormal nitric oxide metabolism.
  • Yohimbe bark has a history of helping men with erectile dysfunction. Yohimbe dilates blood vessels and may help regardless of the underlying cause. If you are on prescription medications, talk to your doctor before taking yohimbe.
  • Muria puama can be used to increase the libido and erectile strength. It works best when combined with yohimbe bark. This combination can be found in Nature’s Sunshine’s X-Action for Men.
  • In Mexico, the herb damiana is used as a male aphrodisiac and is an herb traditionally recommended for men with erectile dysfunction.
  • In Peru, maca is known as a potent aphrodisiac. Maca is often called the herbal “Viagra” and does not alter circulation. Instead it works to regulate hormones and bring the body back into balance.
  • Asian (panax) ginseng is an herb that has long been used to support male potency.
  • Sarsaparilla has a history of being used as a tonic for male sexual potency and is thought to assist in the production of testosterone.
  • Some men find relief when taking ginkgo biloba. Ginkgo biloba supports blood circulation and may help by increasing blood flow to the penis. This supplement is not recommended if you are taking any kind of prescription blood thinner.
  • Traditionally used to lessen the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, saw palmetto stimulates a low libido and increases sexual energy.

The Natural Way to Sexual Health

Sexual health is a topic we often find difficult to define and master. Chinese medicine, with its focus on whole body wellness, supports sexual vitality in an active, complete way. In the age of quick-fix healthcare, it is becoming more necessary to slow the pace and reconnect with ourselves on a deeper level.

Sexuality is not widely considered a healthcare issue, but sexual desire can be a powerful source of healing and personal growth. When suppressed, diminished or dysfunctional, it can have negative effects on wellness. Sexual energy and passion make up a portion of our qi and feed positive aspects of our overall welfare. Sexual health can be greatly enhanced by principles inherent in Chinese medical philosophy.

Chinese herbal aphrodisiacs work in conjunction with every aspect of healthcare, such as good diet and exercise practices and maintaining positive mental health. An individual’s sexual vigor will be increased and aided with the right herbal formula, but overall health and vitality are the key success factors. Chinese medicine seeks to strengthen entire body health.

Acupuncture has been used to treat infertility and sexual functioning to enhance the body’s natural aphrodisiac responses. Studies have shown that acupuncture may affect parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions through which blood pressure, blood flow and body temperature are regulated. These functions factor greatly into sexual vigor.

Acupuncture also regulates the flow of energy in the body. Jing energy is responsible for growth, development and reproduction and represents our sexuality. Jing is lost or consumed little by little throughout life, and once we lose jing, it cannot be replaced. We lose jing when we live recklessly — drinking too much, excessive emotional reactions, working too hard, or inappropriate sexual behavior, for instance. Acupuncture can reduce the loss of jing, and with greater success when paired with moderate living.

Many people feel out of control of their sexual energy because of its powerful nature. Reconnecting with the desire inherent in ourselves is an important aspect of gaining personal power and balance. The ancient Taosists believed that human life is governed by natural laws that produce prosperity when obeyed, but when violated cause catastrophe. With the wisdom, moderation and balance that Chinese medicine promotes, we can avoid illness and fully enjoy our sexual potential.

The Truth About Hair Loss

It is normal to shed hair every day and the truth is we loose between 100 – 125 hairs on any given day. Hair that is shed falls out at the end of growth cycle. At any given time 10% of our hair is in what is called a “resting phase” and after 2- 3 months resting, hair falls out and new hair grows in its place. Some people, however, experience more hair loss than is normal.

As we get older, both men and women experience some hair loss. It’s a normal part of the aging process. Called Androgenetic Alopecia, it accounts for 95% of all hair loss. Androgentic Alopecia often runs in families and affects some people more than others. In men it is often referred to as Male Pattern Baldness. It is characterized by a receding hair line and baldness on the top of head. Women, on the other hand, don’t go entirely bald even if their hair loss is severe. Instead, hair loss is spread out evenly over their entire scalp.

Hormones play the dominant role when talking about Androgenetic Alopecia. Simple put, both men and women produce testosterone. Testosterone can be converted to dihydrotestosterone ( DHT) with the aid of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. DHT shrinks hair follicles causing the membranes in the scalp to thicken, become inelastic and restrict blood flow. This causes the hair follicles to atrophy. As a result, when a hair does fall out, it is not replaced.

Needless to say, men produce more testosterone than women and experience more hair loss.

While Androgenetic Alopecia is the number one reason why individuals experience hair loss, it is not the only one. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, ringworm and fungal infections can cause hair loss. Certain medications such as blood thinners, gout medication, birth control pills and too much vitamin A can cause sudden or abnormal hair loss as can following a crash diet, sudden hormonal changes, chemotherapy and radiation.

Emotional stress, pregnancy, or surgery can also cause our hair to fall out and is usually not noticed until 3-4 months after the stressful event has taken place. Stress can cause a slowing of new hair growth because a larger number of hair follicles enter into the resting phase and no new hair growth is experienced.

Another way in which individuals experience hair loss is due to mechanical stressors on the hair and scalp. Wearing pigtails, cornrows or tight rollers that end up pull on the hair can scar the scalp and cause permanent hair loss. Hair products such as hot oil treatments and chemicals used for permanents can cause inflammation to the hair follicles which can also result in scarring and hair loss.

For some, hair loss may be the early warning sign of a more serious disorder such as lupus or diabetes, so it is important to talk to your doctor. If you or someone you know is suffering from hair loss, here are some alternative health ideas that can help naturally.

Recommendations For Wellness

  • If you are taking prescription medications, talk to your doctor and find out if your medication is contributing to your hair loss.
  • Avoid mega-doses of vitamin A. Too much vitamin A can cause your hair to fall out.
  • Exercise, do yoga, meditate or find some other practice that will help to reduce your anxiety and stress levels.
  • Massage your scalp with rosemary oil in an olive oil base. Both rosemary oil and massaging the scalp can stimulate the circulation in the scalp and promote hair growth.
  • If you are a women, have your female hormones tested. If they are imbalanced, talk to your health care provider about bio-identical hormone replacements.
  • If you wear pigtails, cornrows, use a curling iron, hair dryer or hot rollers, try changing your hair style to one that puts less pressure and stress on your hair and scalp.
  • If hot oil treatments or chemicals such as those used in permanents are causing inflammation to the scalp, discontinue their use, or reduce the number of times you are using them.
  • Use gentle shampoos and conditioners to avoid any unnecessary damage to your hair.
  • In men, herbs such as saw palmetto and licorice root help block the formation of D HT. The same holds true for supplementation with zinc. As an added benefit, studies show that these supplements can also help prevent prostate enlargement.

Autumn Stars (2006)

Cynthia NovakJust when we feared it would never end, the heat of war and the long-hot summer abated. Things always seem clearer in retrospect than they do in the present. Let’s imagine that we are looking back at this time from the future. Imagine what signs of change we might have to indicate that the world is coming to peace. It’s a stretch; look for them and see what you can come up with. For me, I’ll reach to Pluto.

Pluto, the powerful planet of the underworld, has been demoted. No longer considered a planet, he slips out of sight and mind, right? No! Pluto simply moves back into the underworld. His domain is transformation. He is the planet most associated with death: literal death and symbolic death. Isn’t it interesting that he is demoted at a time when more and more people seem comfortable with the thought of life after death? It comes in several forms from TV shows with folks like John Edwards to the assertions of religious and political leaders who speak about the afterlife, martyrdom and Armageddon. Finally, there are the folks who look at life as cycles: a series of births and deaths: Beginnings and endings with accompanying knowledge. Pluto may be off the A-list of planets, but his archetypes are everywhere and the world doesn’t seem ready to let him go.

Pluto was discovered in 1930 at the observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. Call it coincidence or divine synchronicity: the energy of the times as the three outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered just so happens to match what was going on in the world. Uranus appeared during the Revolutionary period,

Neptune during the Transcendental period, and Pluto at the dawn of the Nuclear Age. While the archetype of Pluto is alive and well, the optimist in me can’t help but wonder if his demotion might just signal the end of the nuclear period. Perhaps there is something in the ethers that knows that we are near the end of an era.

The world certainly appears to be abuzz with nuclear possibility and international threats. There is much to fear just as there was in 1930. But maybe, just maybe, we will look back on this demotion as a sign that the world was about to evolve not devolve as it seems in the news. Perhaps the notion that the year 2012 is “the end of time” is really the end of a “way of looking at time” as one Mayan scholar suggests and maybe it’s the end of the nuclear era. It’s hard to imagine but maybe…just maybe….

The World seems filled with stress and both overt and covert standoffs. Neptune, the planet of illusion, is still a planet and Saturn, the planet of tangible action or the fear of it, faces Neptune in the heavens. These dancers will pull apart this autumn, but their impact on each other is felt strongly through mid-October.

The U.S.A.: Who is going to do what to whom? That’s the big question. How will our lives be impacted by those clandestine actions or international plans? The unknown weighs heavily on those who follow world events and they weigh even heavier on the leaders who are faced with critical decisions. History has cycles and the U.S. was a great experiment in 1776. Our leaders chose a Republic over a monarchy. They chose capitalism over socialism and the experiment has flourished. Now, we are at a crossroads.

We are dependent upon other nations and hated by some of another religion. Still, immigration ranks are filled with more people than we can accommodate, both legal and illegal. The Neptune-Saturn dance will continue for at least nine months. We may not know where things are going, but we will have to find faith in that unknown. We will also ind comfort in Saturn’s practical actions. It’s easy to hate “them” both there and here. It’s easy to blame “those guys” of “that party”, but it’s ultimately futile. The antidote is to relish the simple things in daily life.

As women, celebrate our precious freedoms. As pro-active people in a democracy, stop thinking about elections past and turn to those present and future. As members of the world stage, find something wonderful about your fair nation or don’t be surprised when others are as critical or more so. If they see us as separated from their god, show them that we have a faith that is strong, and demonstrate that by simple acts of compassion. Let’s show the gifts of freedom that are creative rather than destructive. With the Neptune–Saturn dance, what we do in our daily lives and our faith in our nation may be the turning point. It shouldn’t require another attack for us to appreciate what we were given by the hard work and courage of our forefathers. People want to come here for what we have come to take for granted; I ask each of you to count your simple blessings and try to turn the energy around now.

Pluto opposes Mars in the USA chart: The nation has faced its mortality. The Pluto transit has been long and slow. As Pluto leaves a transit behind there is a process of awakening. Mars is the war planet, but he is also the planet of action and entrepreneurship. Daring and courageous, Mars is the soldier and the wildcatter and the physical male. On some level the Male energy of the nation has come under attack.

Quick-witted Mars blurts out the truth as he sees it. Mars can be aggressive when cornered—he isn’t afraid of a conflict. We seem to be more afraid of words than real adversaries. We are afraid our children will be criticized and afraid of competition. This is part of the Pluto to Mars awakening too. It’s not all the obvious war. The best of Mars is seen. Just to be cautious, the New Moon in December on the 20th triggers the US chart too. We may be deluged with real and imaginary fears. It’s up to each of us to sort through until we can differentiate. We are also faced with our self-loathing. Look all around: we blame our leaders for every real and imagined failure. How can we expect the world to like us when we compete to find the most wild conspiracy theories and throw reason to the wind?

Pluto slowly pulls away from its opposition to Mars, the warrior planet in the US chart. The final station of Pluto in early September was accompanied by threats from the Pres. of Iran. The final pass, where we are now, is often accompanied by release and relief from the fear and the stress. We should see some way out of the fierce angry stance by Iran’s President this fall. This may also lessen some of the political polarity. Miracles do happen if our hearts are willing. Sometimes when the fear is strong enough, then we pull together. Can you find something good? If not, why have you invested so much of your energy in criticism and so little in creation?

Jupiter Square Saturn: Determined folks will get a lot done; if you aren’t determined, then you’ll just loat along. Jupiter is the planet of manifestation to luck and optimism. Saturn is the practical curmudgeon. Saturn dampens the excitement of Jupiter and sends him back to the drawing board before he gives his blessing. The good news: ideas that make it out of the planning stage and into reality during this period will last. Just when you think that your Jupiter luck is more a Dixie cup than a golden chalice, you realize that Saturn is giving something that will last. For all of you with planets in Libra, Jupiter spends October giving you his best. He may have to prove himself to the task-master Saturn, but he gets lots of help from Mercury, the business planet, Mars, the activist, the Sun or life force and finally, Venus, the planet of love and money. You do get help with your project, but they bring distractions, too. Better get your time organized so you can enjoy the party…it’s coming, though Jupiter pulls away in November to bless another group. Folks with personal planets in Vedic Libra enjoy the party all through November. This is a great time for true love or just a romantic ling. At least you’ll want to spiff up and look around to see who might be looking back at ya’.

Magical New Moons: The New Moon is always a time to start something. It weds the passion of the Sun and the emotion of the Moon so we can dive in and charge ahead. On October 22nd Venus and Mars lank the union of the Sun and Moon. They are in a tight union and cover less than 2 degrees of the 360 degrees circle of the zodiac belt. They all fall in the mansion Chitra. Chitra holds the fixed star Spica and is associated with the harvest and good fortune. Venus is very strong there so love is in the air and Mars brings passion to that mixture. If you happen to have a personal planet from 3-5 degrees of Libra in your Vedic chart, you’ll feel this intensely. Remember, a personal planet is one that can be seen without a telescope. Most of us will feel it in the air.

These planets are not alone. Jupiter is still in Libra and on this new Moon the luck planet is joined by Mercury, the analytical or business planet. Great ideas will be born at this time. Venus catches Mars just after the October New Moon. The goddess of love catches her man and she is strong. This is good for romance and helpful in mediation.

Expect some surprise help for world discord in October. The New Moon is great for cleaning up hurt feelings and animosity. Replace separation with passionate, shared commerce. Invest in each other…what have we got to lose? The New Moon energy is in the air until the next one in November. If you don’t have any planets in Libra or Scorpio, don’t feel left out. Aries and Taurus find the joy tossed to them as well. If you have any personal planets in Aries, then October is great fun. If you have any personal planets in Taurus between 0 and 15 degrees, then the holiday season is your time to shine.

The November 20th New Moon is another gathering of planets with Jupiter: Here, the Sun, Moon and Venus come together in Vedic Scorpio. If you have a planet from 0 to 10 degrees Scorpio you are unusually passionate and playful. The light-hearted romantic planets come first; then in December Mars joins them. He and Jupiter could just jump into something serious during the holidays. This is great for romance and fabulous for a new business or hobby.

Mercury turns retrograde on October 28th and direct on November 17th. We could use a little mental distraction and relaxation. Mercury goes direct and things flow more easily just in time for the holidays. If you fall off of your to-do list, you’ll have plenty of mental concentration to catch up at the last minute. If you have any personal planets in Taurus, then you’ll get a boost, too.

The December new Moon on the 20th is a little different. The Sun and Moon are in a more tumultuous place in the heavens. They join Pluto near the center of the Milky Way a.k.a. “the Galactic Center”. This is where mental turmoil, fears and compulsive thinking are rampant. If you have a planet between 0 and 6 degrees of Sagittarius, then practice conscious detachment. Better yet, focus your attention on the precious things in nature and in the people in your life. There may be a scare around this time. It’s up to each of us to focus our attention on the good stuff but be alert to things that simply don’t fit. Mars and Jupiter are still aligned, which might indicate boasting, but it’s not a time to ignore a threat.

How the love grows: Venus chases Mars in early October, but she catches him just as the New Moon fades. This time is notoriously good for love and romance. If you have a personal planet in Virgo or Libra in your Vedic chart, chances are you are in the mood. This is also good for business, particularly in October: Time to get the ideas down on paper or even better, get things rolling. If this sounds good for the holidays you are right: Time to spruce up and celebrate life.

Names in the News

GWB has one last, long Saturn transit weighing upon him. Saturn crosses Venus, the planet of Love, in October. Venus rules his house of home, family, mother: It also governs the house of “groups of people.” Not surprisingly, he may not feel the love from a group, but he might also feel the vulnerability of age of one or both of his parents. This transit moves slowly back and forth for 9 months. It sensitizes him to many things and many people. W begins to receive very positive transits in November and these will continue for a full year. I don’t see anything that looks like impeachment or law suits. However, I do see a heavy heart.

Condoleezza Rice returns to the news in October and may be making news. Expect to see her praised or honored. She can feel the good stuff, and others can see you favorably.

Iran: the President of Iran continues to shout to the world and demand the right to enrich uranium and the need to destroy Israel. He has a very volatile chart. I did learn that he is not technically in charge of that decision for Iran. He may inflame and may push Iran back in time, but the Ayatollah Khamenei has power over him. Fortunately, he has a very patient chart. I don’t know what this means for the world, but it is somewhat comforting for the present. Iran has more than 55% of its population under the age of 20. With youth, there is hope for change in the midst of madness.

Hilary Clinton gets a big boost from Jupiter just in time for the senatorial race. The bad press and negative polls of August roll off her.

Barak Obama isn’t running for the Democratic nomination, but he should be. The man is radiant, lively, passionate and astute. I believe he will be the first Black president. Aspects would be really good in November 2008. There is a long line of contenders before him.

Texas Governor Race: The big debate is October 6. Chris Bell, the Democrat, who has gotten the least amount of publicity has the best transits in October and November. He won’t slip quietly into the dim shadows of the race and should be interesting to hear in the debate. Kinky Friedman got tons of publicity and will be lively that night as well. The other two will probably be a little wooden but definitely worth listening to.
