Choosing Wellness

Have you ever stood on the edge of a lake and watched the patterns that waves make as they crisscross each other? If you watch long enough, the different patterns begin to sort themselves out in your mind and you see the sources of the waves as well as their reflections from the shore. Waves are unique, they can pass through each other, amplify each other, or even cancel each other out.

Waves are all around us in the form of light, sound, infrared, and countless other bands of unlabeled spectral energy. Science and technology take great leaps when we identify, label, and manipulate a previously untapped frequency spectrum. Think about how X-Rays and ultrasound have transformed western medicine.

Holistic medicine makes use of both light and sound energies to enhance mind, body, and spirit. Energy medicine is at the heart of both homeopathy and acupuncture. Despite all of the advances in vibrational medicine, we live in a world where the predominant mainstream medical model is based on particles (atoms) not waves (energies). Take a prescribed measured dosage of a drug and you are likely to exhibit known healing effects. Take the same prescribed dosage of a sugar pill and quite often you will also exhibit the expected healing effects. The placebo effect is so powerful that drug-makers now struggle to “beat” the placebo in drug trials—you see it’s not that the drug doesn’t work well enough—it’s that the sugar pill works too well!

When holistic medical approaches discover a healing remedy, medical authorities often make it known that they don’t approve. Common sense tells us that taking and mixing pharmaceutical drugs is best done under a doctor’s supervision. However, ordinary lifestyle choices like how to exercise and how many calories to consume are also being corralled by the medical establishment, who feel confident to tell you that it is dangerous to live on a 500-calorie diet without doctor supervision! There may be dangerous habits, but with obesity at an all-time high, any movement towards eating less should be applauded, not criticized.

I hope you can learn to cut through the misinformation and use your own intuition to find holistic approaches and practitioners that will guide and support you in your lifestyle choices.

Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT)

Integrative Cancer CareCancer: A Result of the Perfect Storm
Cancer is a disease of the immune system that deserves special attention. The literature sites no less than 100 reasons for the cause of cancer. However, the most profound causes are related to lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise and life events such as job and relationship stress. Additionally, environmental factors also play a key role in creating the perfect storm for cancer as for all disease. When addressed, these same environmental factors (like clean food, air and water) can help aid in recovery.

I foresee in the near future that most if not all diseases will have a cure, because future health professionals will combine the understanding of solid scientific principles in nutrition, detoxification, biochemistry, biophysics and psychology to synthesize the solution to conquering cancer. The pieces of the answer are out there, but nobody has connected all the dots.

Many years from now we will look back on this period in medical history and wonder why it took so long to synthesize the answer for cancer. Future doctors will have depth of knowledge in all disciplines of medicine. Understanding of Western Medicine, Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Naturopathy, Structural Medicine, Integrative Medicine, Functional Dentistry and Nutrition may supersede pharmaceutical medicine.

However, this only covers the medical side of things. It is crucial that the physician studies and understands the dynamics of the patient’s relationship to his/her family, the dynamics of friends, the dynamics of the working environment and the patient’s commitment and financial ability to complete recommended treatments. In the comprehensive cancer care model, the willingness of everyone involved with the patient is a factor in survival rate. I have seen many situations where friends and relatives impose their will on a patient rather than allowing the patient to choose their own treatments.

Insulin Potentiation Low Dose Chemotherapy (IPT or IPTLD) is an interesting bridge between mainstream conventional chemotherapy and complementary medicine. IPT, which was invented in Mexico over 70 years ago, uses insulin in the beginning of a chemotherapy infusion as a biological response modifier. Insulin is infused in the beginning of treatment and the blood sugar is lowered to the therapeutic moment. Cancer cells need sugar to make energy and they have 16 times more insulin receptors than normal cells. Therefore IPT uses the cancer cell’s weakness of more readily absorbing insulin to target the cancer cell for destruction.

The insulin receptors help the cancer cell absorb more of the chemotherapeutic agents. Therefore less of the chemo is needed (10% to 25% of the usual dose) in order to achieve cancer cell death. With the normal cells the opposite is true. The normal, stronger cells are less affected by the chemo thus minimizing symptoms such as nausea, hair loss, blood cell effects and loss of appetite.

Doctors that perform this type of therapy can be found on the web site www.iptforcancer.com. This web site, operated by the Best Answer for Cancer Foundation in Austin, TX, a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization was founded by a patient survivor in 2005. Annie Brandt, the founder and executive director has been cancer free for ten years now and has made it her life’s work to bring awareness to IPT as well as to the whole host of treatments and therapies that can be used in a comprehensive program to beat cancer. She hosts an annual meeting where integrative practitioners of all stripes come to share their latest treatment information. The foundation is also sponsoring an FDA registered Quality of Life Study which is under way currently at Kotsanis Institute in Grapevine, TX.

The Odyssey Of A Cancer Patient:

As a cancer patient one must consider at least seven parameters before seeking out IPT or other integrative therapies.

First and foremost, one must understand the advantages and shortcomings of IPT therapies. The co-morbidities (conditions that exist concurrent to the cancer) usually include dental problems with multiple mercury fillings and problematic root canals. Many patients have had several severe infections in their history for which they may have had multiple rounds of antibiotics. This may have disrupted normal digestive ecology creating a situation that bred fungal infections For example one recent patient had severe recurring episodes of tonsillitis and was placed on many antibiotics for a great length of time prior to tonsillectomy. Blood tests done elsewhere also showed toxicity to aluminum. This patient’s treatment with IPT although very successful initially, failed to provide a long term solution because once the patient achieved remission she was under the impression that no further attention to the cancer was necessary. In fact people with cancer need to understand that once you are diagnosed with this disease, you must follow medically supervised treatments and implement lifestyle and dietary changes for life.

Second, patients must choose a physician that they like. Just remember, a good physician will offer you appropriate therapy, a great physician will serve you for life!

Third, one must dedicate the time needed to get healthy and stay healthy; this is a lifelong commitment. An aggressive antioxidant program (pH and ORP manipulations), along with correction of hormone dysfunctions and correction of emotional stressors can be highly beneficial. For the emotional component we refer to an integrative practitioners who are able to address emotional issues using various forms of energetic medicine and counseling.

Fourth, one must make permanent changes in nutrition for life under the supervision of your IPT physician or a Clinical Nutritionist. The patient may have to make drastic changes to diet, including eliminating almost all sugar intake. A supportive spouse and family should encourage the patient to follow their heart’s desire to conquer their disease. Patients usually engage by reading books about natural healing. I recommend every person read The China Study by Campbell. This completely changes most people’s mind about life and nutrition. Although most patients do not go 100% raw vegan, eliminating all non organic foods and most animal food products and sugars can make a dramatic difference. Most patients see that this change has made a significant improvement in their health.

Fifth, one must accept the recommended IPT therapies without being stressed out of their mind as to “why do I have to change my ways at this stage of my life.”

Sixth, one must understand the financial implications involved with any long term therapies, including IPT, before getting started. Too often I see patients that stop medically supervised treatments because of financial distress. As soon as they begin to feel better, some patients take it upon themselves to continue home treatments without medical supervision; usually this approach can be dangerous and bring a lot of undesirable complications. Regular check ups, blood work and imaging is a must.

Seventh, last but not least, one must aggressively explore all treatment options for life!

Facing Your Karma

The word karma has become so commonplace today that one runs the risk of trivializing one the most sacred and essential laws of life. It’s amazing to think that not that long ago the term was virtually unknown in the west and now there are coffee shops that bear its name!

What is karma? The word is derived from the Sanskrit root “kr” meaning “deed or act.” Karma is related to action in any form: physical, mental, or emotional. Karma is always followed by its effect. As the term has become more popularized, the entire principle of action and its effect all fall under the single term karma. Intimately linked to the law of karma is the process of reincarnation. Reincarnation offers you, through successive embodiments in physical form, the time to work out your karma and fully express the gift of free will.

Karma is the balancer of life—the harmonizer. The natural condition of life is harmony. God is harmony. When you act in a destructive manner, you unbalance that natural state. Your destructive actions will create a ripple effect against the fabric of life bouncing back as you have put it out. Once this discordant energy has been set into motion, the painful tuning process then begins until harmony is restored.

When you initiate a creative, constructive act, the same law of karma applies but the results are completely different. When you do something that is in harmony with the natural laws of life, this action also reverberates through the fabric of life but instead of throwing off the natural harmony, this “good” energy expands and enhances the ever expanding, creative cosmic process. You are adding to the divine life and this blessing will reverberate back to you multiplied!

Karma is generated with your every thought, word, emotion, act and deed. It can reach into any aspect of your life. You can have karma related to family, money, health, relationships. And there are many different types of karma. There is personal karma, soul karma, mental karma, emotional karma, national karma, race karma and world karma. That’s a lot of cause and effect going on! The law of karma is designed in love to make you a greater being and realize the great goal you have. Karma is designed always to help build you up not tear you down or punish you. Without the laws of karma you could not grow and reach spiritual mastery.

It takes courage to look at your faults and face your karma. There can be a natural inclination is to avoid anything that is unpleasant. One of the hardest things is to realize that as an evolving soul you have done it all. Through your many incarnations, you have done great and noble things and you have done not so great thing things. It’s all part of the growing process and all these things play a role in the karmic pattern of your life.

If you were too passive in a past life, you will have to develop a dynamic will in this life. If you were cruel in a past marriage, you will have to show kindness now. If you were impatient before, you will have to learn patience now and so on. You will find the character traits you express now are as a result of your accumulated past lifetimes of experience.

Your experiences in this life are but one chapter in your book of life. You simply cannot judge or see the whole picture of your life history from the viewpoint of a single lifetime, not matter what that life is like. There will always be good karma that you bring in and karma that you need to redeem. Whatever the karmic slate is, you cannot outrun your karma. Facing and resolving karma is one of the most effective ways to quicken your spiritual development. And avoiding and delaying learning the lessons your karma presents, can slow down your spiritual progress no matter how effective you are in other areas of your life.

Fortunately God gives you the strength to face any challenge. There is no sin past forgiveness and no difficulty so great that you cannot surmount them. After all, God brought you to Earth to succeed. Whatever challenges you’re meant to encounter, you’ve also be given the spiritual tools to succeed. If you have difficult family karma to work out of, maybe you are given extra power to express exceptional patience or a great talent to help you rise above that difficulty. If you have financial karma, maybe you’re given added power to demonstrate a bright keen mind to help you think of ways to bring money in. Whatever it is, you will be given the tools to enhance your natural talents and abilities to work out any difficulty.

You rise above every situation by your attitude. You will not always be in control of the conditions in your life, but you are always in control of how you react and handle those conditions. Spiritually speaking, it’s not what happens to you that matters as much as how you handle what happens. And this is the key to handling any type of karma no matter how severe.

Ultimately, regardless of present conditions, you are earmarked for greatness. You have a glorious destiny. Although you may not fully see the great plan of life, nevertheless you are part of that plan. Let hope live in your heart. Tough times may come but they will also pass and your true destiny will come shining through.

Your Winter Stars (2011)

Cynthia NovakI am excited to talk about this season. How can anyone resist a year that begins on 1-1-11? As an astrologer, I know that the different planets move through segments of the heavens on their own time or cycles. Occasionally they gather in one area. Sometimes it is in a constellation other times they are close together in a lunar mansion or section of the heavens that is only as far as the Moon passes in a single day. The ancient Hindu astrologers called these nakshatras. What has me so excited is a big gathering in a very difficult place is pulling apart. Imagine they were stuck together in a bureaucratic line leading no where, or worse; they were drunk at a bar and couldn’t leave.

The important thing is they are tired and increasingly weary of ego. Folks are weary of terrible talk and future dread. Terrible-izing sells, for a while, but by mid-January its time is over. So, this is the perfect time to see opportunity! Yes, anyone who has a really good idea or an eye for the good stuff is in a position to succeed. Succeed how? You ask. Will it be in love, money, career or health? Can a person rise to the situation? Can she transcend her desires to become a kind and loving partner? Can any of us see the gift in life and the value in using our gifts? Can we position ourselves to succeed? The answer to all of these is “yes”!

The planets are in a series of lunar mansions that are called the white mansions. The first was in December: that mansion was literal or figurative loss. Now we move to opportunity: Keep your eyes open and your senses tuned to your own talents and opportunities for you.

January 2011 1-11: Take a look in the mirror at your body and your spirit. What do you see? If you are too weary to make a resolution on the 1st, then you are not alone. However, take some notes any way. You’ll have them waiting when you are ready. The beginning of this month is still a bit of the stale smoke and indigestion from last year. Let it pass. You may overindulge for a few days, but as the Moon crosses the Sun (new Moon) then Mars on the 4th, it also makes a partial Solar Eclipse. This eclipse is visible in northern Africa, but is most visible from London east across Paris, through Romania and into the former USSR. The track takes it through Iran and Iraq, too. These nations will be in the news. Yes, some are potentially volatile now. As we start the year, Iran’s nuclear potential is indeed real and neighboring nations are wise to try to stop it.

For most of us, as the Moon crosses Jupiter and Uranus on the 10th, we can see changes in our lives that are built on last year’s experience. Get started or be prepared as we enter the month. Take a class or try something different. Honestly, the old Saturn line was never so true: If you keep going the way you are going, you see right where you will end up!” If you want a change, then get it started. Sign up for something fresh or new even if you must push yourself to the first session…or three.

February 2011: We begin the month again on a dark thoughtful moon. In fact, it’s called the balsamic phase of the moon. It is hard to see where we are going; but we know where we’ve been and are looking for change. Now, Mars and the Sun are in a very powerful place. I hope you got going in January, because you already see the results of your work or your work outs! As the Moon crosses the Sun and Mars on the 2nd and Jupiter Uranus on the 6th, it is a powerful time to create a business, start dating or learn to dance: Anything that involves action and interaction. There is no better month to start a business plan or make a daring change. Caveat: don’t do it unless you know in your heart you are willing to take the risk and to work, or even fight for it….whatever “it” is.

Sure, you might gain some weight back or lose some of your investment. There are no guarantees in life except that it will change, but these planets are great for business and action. If you have a great job, find a way to engage your body and spirit outside of work. If you have a good marriage or family, then make changes elsewhere. There is no better month to really assess what your passions and talents are and engage them. If you aren’t using them in your job, then find an outlet. If you can’t even see them, then come for a personal astrology reading and I’ll help you see your aptitude and take a good look at your attitude….grins.

March 2011: It keeps getting better. The New Moon comes on the 4th and the Moon joins the Sun and Mars in a mansion that is all about getting to the root of the matter. It’s good for health and great for action to rebuild your body. Think herbs or good will and a good diet. The planets are really helpful. The white mansions help us get out ourselves, and help us see how the way any of us expresses “me” in the world has a great impact on others. For most of us, it’s easy to find the good stuff. In fact, it’s just as easy as finding the daily drama. Look for the good stuff as the Moon triggers Jupiter on the 6th. Focus on where you are going today and in this minute and the drama divas will have to look far and wide for an audience. This sounds simple, but that’s because in some ways it really is. Look for the simple solutions. If you know you “terrible-ize” or crave the bad stuff, then look into your eyes in the mirror and give your thoughts the gift of saying “no” to self-destruction or self-deprecation. Announce what you can do and do it. The Moon crosses that happy Jupiter Uranus again on the 6th of March.

President Obama: January the President appears to come out of hibernation. The gathering in December was in a very difficult place in his chart: Difficult for stress, anxiety, international threats and fears. It was in his 12th house (I call it your personal anxiety closet filled with real and imagined monsters). However, more than anything, the focus in January is on the rebirth of his Presidency. As we walk through the winter months, he comes out and stands out. Vedic astrology deals with huge cycles in a person’s life. In that model, President Obama is at the very end of his Jupiter cycle. Think of Jupiter as the consummate politician. By the end of 2012, he is in his Saturn Cycle, which is more wise elder statesman (yes, even though he is young). So, he may indeed be in the final years of his Presidential career. The big question: what will he do with the time that remains? His cabinet continues to change. It’s time for the President to lead us toward economic recovery. As Mars crosses the front of his chart in January, he makes a powerful stand. As Mars moves through February, we see action. As always, I wish the President well; may his new advisers be wise.

The Economy: I looked back in time to see when the planets last gathered in Sagittarius with the eclipse path in the USA; and yes, the US went through economic reorganization. The eclipse path has a very fated quality: Time to let something go. Given the US birthday or birth chart as 7-4-1776, these periods often indicate a shift in parties, economic strategy and alliances. Look back to the end of 1991 and the beginning of 1992. Then, as now, real estate had taken a hit, [remember the S&L debacle?] unemployment was high and the government was literally broke. However, here we are today looking back on a boom or two since then. It is important, make that essential, to look at where you are and move if you have to: Internally or even literally. That’s easier said than done and the move may only be in attitude. Saturn is the pragmatist. Each planet leaves the gathering and has an audit with Saturn. Saturn says: where have you invested your time, energy money and love? One by one the planets take stock and assess if it’s time to change or to be still. Is it time to commit or stay free? By the time we get to the summer of 2011, these decisions bear fruit. I am not a financial adviser, but it is a good time to invest if you are calm and calculated. I believe the new cycle is here.

Visionary Art: Breakthrough!

Breakthrough!
Breakthrough! by Nicole Mizoguchi

The surface is cracked open and something expansive and new emerges.

We release what is no longer working and allow new experiences to come through.

In our lives, we have been reinventing ourselves. And reaching for more love, more money, and more dreams to be fulfilled. Through that process, there are temporary challenges, as we birth our new selves.

We can’t see fully how amazing we really are yet. Or how our glorious dreams are manifesting. But by holding visions of joy and persevering, we will soon see things clearly. It’s an exciting time.

Be gentle with yourself, trust, and keep going.

Opportunity is Knocking

opportunity knocksThe past few years we have been experiencing a global recession. Although this has been a big adjustment for many people, I have been amazed at all of the many opportunities this has presented. Housing has become more affordable with mortgage rates lower than they have been in decades, technology has gotten better and cheaper, people have become more grateful for what they do have, and businesses offering valuable products and excellent service are continuing to thrive.

Although so much has seemed out of our control, there are many things that we do have control over. I have found it invaluable to listen to Rodney Anderson’s radio show on Saturdays from 8:00 to 9:00am on 105.3 The FAN and from 11:00am to noon on News Radio 1080 KRLD. Rodney is a Nationally acclaimed Expert, Author, and Consumer Advocate for overall financial wellness, who resides in the Dallas metroplex. He recently authored the book, “Credit 911: Secrets and Strategies to Saving Your Financial Life”, which is an amazing resource for many of the things we are not taught in school, such as improving and maintaining an excellent credit score. I have learned so much from Rodney over the years and have applied this knowledge in many useful ways.

Since the recession began, Tony and I have been able to refinance our home at just 4.5%, lower our homeowners insurance premium while maintaining the same coverage by going with a different insurance company, lower the rate from our electric company (just by asking), and purchase a hybrid at an excellent price with 0% interest. In addition, we have upgraded our computer systems for much less money than we previously spent with more power and features than we had before. All in all, we have found an abundance of opportunities that have improved our lives dramatically, helped us lower our expenses, and given us a lot to be grateful for.

I believe that years from now we will look back and be astonished at the low interest rates and incentives that are being offered right now and many will wish they had had the foresight to take advantage of them. I hope you will look for and find the many opportunities and blessings in your life, even in these times that many find so trying. I encourage you to find solutions to life’s challenges and to be part of the recovery.

Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Wellness

Ben's Octet
In 1971, amidst much controversy, Daniel Ellsberg and the New York Times published a bevy of secret government documents that came to be known as the “Pentagon Papers”. The Washington Post subsequently published portions of the classified reports. Fast forward to 2010 and observe the almost unanimous media outrage over Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks. The difference? Ellsberg, was a “professional” journalist and Assange is not. The fuss about WikiLeaks is not simply about security or freedom of speech. It’s actually about who is “authorized” to speak freely. The mainstream media will have you believe that you can speak freely only if you have a license to do so. Whether there is a distinction between “professional” and “amateur” journalism is a matter of debate.

We live in an age of rapid change — today’s industry giants are tomorrow’s dinosaurs. Not only can two guys in a garage disrupt an industry, but a 17 year-old with a good idea and an Internet connection can, too. Propelling these rapid changes is the rise of “user generated” content by amateurs — you and me — with access to knowledge and resources far beyond what kings and heads-of-state had in the 20th Century.

In our hyper-connected world, information flows freely. The famous phrase “information wants to be free” is often misunderstood to be about cost — it’s actually about freedom. Information “wants” to be free to spread. When information flows freely, amateurs and professionals alike are empowered to modify, extend, and remix it.

At Holistic Networker, we have been celebrating the growth of “do-it-yourself” wellness for almost two decades. The wellness revolution has, at its core, been one of personal responsibility and accountability for your own physical, mental, and spiritual growth. The doctor, the therapist, and the priest are valuable sources of assistance for healing, but for many Americans, they are no longer dogmatic authority figures, but rather trusted advisors.

Will you soon be like Rambo—suturing your own injuries? Maybe not soon, but you can bet that some wunderkind is creating a DIY suture kit right now. As information is set free, watch how a new generation of creative minds innovate, experiment, and hack their way to new levels of health, intelligence, and happiness.

Let’s Talk about Sex

First of all it seems that I can’t watch TV without seeing a commercial for Viagra or something like it. I know that sexual dysfunction is a common problem for men. It is also a common problem for women. I get lots of questions from my female patients about how to feel better and more sexual. So this is a common problem! Don’t feel alone. Men can’t even seem to say the words “erection dysfunction.” Instead we talk in code and say “ED” and hope the other person knows what we are talking about. There are lots of things that can be done to help. Sex and reproduction are physical things that happen when the body is working fairly well, right? If you are bleeding or throwing up‚ then sex is not really on your mind. However, people forget about things that might be making the body stressed out and are not so obvious…like depression, exhaustion, chronic pain, heart disease, diabetes, and so on.

Let’s look at a couple of these for a minute. Take exhaustion for example. If you are so tired you don’t even want to do your normal fun things, what makes you think you would want to have sex? Depression has the same effect. As for other physical problems, you can feel all right, but have some underlying physical dysfunctions. In other words you will feel your most sexual when your body is in good health. And let’s not forget that if you have some emotional issues with your partner, then you’ll have problems as well. (However, that is not in the realm of things I can help with so we’ll stick to body chemistry here.) Keep in mind that some of the problems that cause low libido can be the same things that prevent pregnancy.

Let’s take the case that you love your partner, but are either having some problem with performing the sex act or you just don’t seem to want it. What can you do about it? Well the TV would have men just swallow Viagra for the rest of their lives and women take an anti-depressant. Well, from my perspective we have to take a step back and look at the whole body and the way it functions. There are some common stressors that can cause you problems: chronic infections, toxins, food allergies, hormone imbalances, and acupuncture problems. I won’t discuss in detail about how to treat them, but any of these stressors can cause overall health problems including trouble performing sexually or desiring sex. So if you don’t feel like yourself‚ then consider getting tested for hidden infections, toxins of all sorts, and food allergies. These can be major downers to feeling good. (And for those of you who haven’t visited my office that is what I test for on everyone!) These hidden stressors are what cause most fertility problems as well!

Another problem is hormone imbalances. We’ll look at those problems from a male and female point of view in a minute. Another problem is nutritional deficiencies. You can’t put junk food in your body and expect to feel great. You’ve got to eat good food. When and for how long? Well…as long as you want to feel good (your entire life). If you are ever feeling too good, then just eat bad food for a while and your enthusiasm and energy will drop. I promise! We eat too much sugar, too many bad fats, too many grains, and not enough fresh fruit, vegetables, and meats. Sometimes eating well needs a little extra help from some nutritional supplements. A good multi-vitamin and a fish oil are a great place to start. Don’t kid yourself and think that a cheap one-a-day vitamin tablet is cutting it. There is a 95% chance that the tablet is ending up in the toilet, still in the same shape as when you ate it. It doesn’t dissolve and then it has no chance of being absorbed. So you need a good multi-vitamin, not just a cheap one. There are good cheap ones and there are bad expensive ones; you just need to find a good one (whatever the cost) and stick with it. (I regularly test and identify which ones are good for a person and which ones are unnecessary.) Now let’s look at men and women individually.

If you rule out chronic infections, toxins, food allergies, and nutritional deficiencies, then women seem to have some hormonal issues that are real trouble- especially with the thyroid gland. Surprisingly, 95% of a woman’s problems stem from thyroid troubles. So as you might expect I spend a lot of time testing for and helping balance thyroid function. What does the thyroid do? The thyroid influences almost everything: digestion, energy, sleep, skin, hair, headaches…hmm what else? How about all of the other hormones in the body? In the hierarchy of things, the thyroid is more important than the ovaries or adrenal glands. When the thyroid has trouble, lots of other things don’t work right because the thyroid is so influential. What helps the thyroid? Well, certain minerals help the thyroid work better so I test for which ones are needed. Certain herbs seem to balance the thyroid as well. Sometimes Iodine can help the thyroid, but at other times it can overstimulate it. It is a finicky organ, but it responds really, really well when you feed it the right nutrition.

Most men’s sexual performance problems come from the heart. A common problem with sexual performance is erection difficulty. So what causes a man to have an erection in the first place? Blood flow and the brain telling the blood flow to get going! So if a man has a hidden heart problem, then he can have erection problems. I see it all of the time. Also, don’t forget that the nervous system has to tell the heart and blood vessels to do their job. If the brain has toxins in it, then you can have some misfiring of the nerves and things don’t work quite right. What helps the brain if toxins are in it? Detoxifying! That means taking some supplements for a month or two to get the junk out of your brain. Is it worth it? Definitely! And what about the heart? What does it need? Perpetual Viagra? No! How about some B-vitamins, magnesium, or fish oil. That will do the trick. So men if you have erection problems, then that is just the tip of an iceberg. Viagra is a band-aid to something going on with the heart or brain. Viagra does not heal the heart. It just whips it like a tired horse and forces it to work for an hour or two. The heart and brain (just like the rest of the body) respond and heal really well when you give it the right nutrition. The body is a healing machine if you just give it what it needs, clean it, and get out of the way.

Another hormone that makes us feel sexual, young, and vibrant is growth hormone. With time our levels of growth hormone can decrease and then we don’t have as much libido, muscle mass, energy, good sleep, and healing ability as when we were teens. In our teen years the growth hormone is at the highest level. So when someone is not feeling good sexually it is helpful to test to see if the pituitary gland is needing some nutritional help to heal. Or sometimes the body just needs some of the amino acids and vitamins that are the building blocks for growth hormone. We can test to see if you need some extra amino acids. Also, growth hormone is released more after intense exercise…another reason to stay fit and visit the gym as we get older.

So…in case you like to jump to the end and read the summary, this is for you. You could just feel in general “not well” and in that case it is hidden infections, toxins, or a food allergy. Women- ask me or your natural health care provider to check your thyroid. Men- you probably need something done to help with circulation and that means the heart. All of these things can be helped. If you have a problem with low sex-drive please mention it to me or your natural health care provider. There are specific things to test for and that can help with this condition. There is no need to keep it private and hope it “gets better.” Let’s do something about it!

Painting Workshops

Joseph will be teaching painting workshops every Monday through Thursday, guiding or offering inspiration to all of us to connect to the creative flow of art ourselves. We are here in this lifetime to connect the world with those who are hungry, need money, shelter, care, support, love and respect.

We are taking just one step at a time. We want to ignite and encourage you who are reading this to follow your dream.

On September 4, 2009, I was homeless.

I have been blessed to be in the Homeless Club. I have joined a club which includes celebrities who at time in their lives slept in their cars, shelters, under bridges, and train stations…

They include Dr. Phil, Joe Vitale, David Letterman, Drew Carey, Jim Carey, Danny Bonaduce, Halle Barry, Kelly Clarkson, Kelsey Grammer, Ella Fitzgerald, Jewel, Debbie Reynolds, Heather Mills, Jim Morrison, Sally Jesse Raphael, William Shatner, Martin Sheen, Sylvester Stallone, Hilary Swank, Shania Twain, Colonel Sanders, Jean-Claude Van Damme…

This is just a handful.

Again, let me say, I have been blessed. Firstly, by being so humbled…

This allows me to Love Unconditionally. Being given a place to sleep, food
and shelter… I have never before experienced this much gratitude.
At the shelter, there were two women who delivered an envelope, mysteriously, to me. In this envelope was $600 from someone anonymous.
There are people who give unconditionally of their
love, time and money! Taking nothing in life for granted.

In this shelter, I also learned that we, (myself and society), have placed thousands of people called “Homeless” into a category and treated them as “Lepers.” Because I have been a business owner and felt myself to be a pillar of the community in my former professional roles, this was especially humbling.

In 2009, Brother Chi Sing, Founder of the New Dallas Meditation Center, said to me, “Trish, let’s change the word Homeless to Pilgrims.” Years and years ago, people surely were not so calloused to the down and out, or to people without abodes.

“Homeless” is antiquated, and Pilgrim is the new basic life module.

From this point on, I have made a commitment to refer to myself and
everyone else as Pilgrims, and invite you to do the same.

Like many, I was brought up to believe that you clean out your pantries and closets and give what you don’t want to “Them”… However, would you (or I) ever invite “Them” to dinner? All I ask is that when you see someone asking for money, lets evolve our thinking toward:
Is she hungry?

I didn’t tell my family or friends I was going into a shelter because they would have tried to rescue me.

Mother Theresa, Lady Di and so many others have been sent to us to show how to give to the poor… Now, I will also include myself. I will include Joseph, because I’ve watched him give his money and his time to so many.

In January of 2008, I asked God to make me More Humble. I still had too much of an ego… even though my family and friends loved me just as I was.

In February, I volunteered at the Democratic Primaries. I worked from 6am to 10pm. I drank a cup of coffee and two diet cokes that day. The intense energies of the Obama-Clinton campaign plus the caffeine raised my blood pressure high enough to burst the blood vessels in my eyes.

This new eyesight challenge brought my earnings to nothing. With no money, I couldn’t afford the $1,025 per month apartment I was living in.

I stayed with some friends for a few days and called some shelters looking for a place to stay. They were full, but they told me that they could have space in a few days.

I called The Center for Spiritual Living, or CSL, which is a community where I attend services on Sundays, and because I do not drive, I usually use the bus to get there.

I called and spoke with Reverend Marsha asking for help… She said, “I did not know that there was a need at CSL for people in your situation, but I guess there is.” She allowed me to stay there from September 4th to the 11th.

When I arrived at the center, I went to her office. She gave me a key. I told her “I don’t know why my path has brought me to the point of going to a shelter, I will know later. I have to go there.” She told me I had a lot of faith.

My Room at CSL was the Teen Room. I could eat the food that was in the community fridge. There was a shower, a washer and dryer.

She asked me, had I applied for disability? I’d heard this question before from several loving, close friends. Before, I didn’t understand why people would even ask me this. I knew I was not disabled… but it was dawning, after two years of living with my visual challenge, that this was a disability!!!!

The disability check was for someone who was disabled…Well now that I was headed to live in a shelter, no money, asking for help, I understood…
That check was for me.

She was probably the fourth person to mention this. I gave in… and decided this would be the next thing to work on. Right then, I was working on finding a place to sleep.

On September 9th, I went to a class called Unexpected Gifts, being taught by Rev. Dr. Petra Weldes and Dr. Cynthia Rexroat, RscP.

Afterward, I went back to MY Room, (where they were letting me stay), the Teen Room. I walked in and saw a string of lights that I hadn’t noticed before.
They hung from the top of the ceiling… Blues, Greens, many different colors. Now, magically, they were here glowing in the room that had been dark…

A male voice said “Hi Tracy.”

BouyanceHe startled me…someone in my room… I immediately turned the main light on. I was magnetically attracted to this voice. I corrected him by telling him my name was Trisha… I went to sit on the couch, ninety degrees from where he sat. His name was Joseph. We talked for 45 minutes. I was fascinated…
He was in My Room, doing art with crayola crayons on a pad. I found out this was “His Room,” in that he was a part time teacher for the children, and he was an artist, and would use this room to come and sit and color.

After talking to him for 45 minutes he gave me $30 unconditionally from his heart… and from his unemployment check. At this moment, he touched my life and I was enveloped with his love. I was about to go into a shelter, and little did I know I would be aided by someone with his strength. I didn’t know I would need this… I’ve always been quite the independent business woman. With this new eyesight challenge, I was extremely humbled.

I am okay in asking for help.

This man, with whom I would fall in love with over the following months stayed with me for the next thirty hours. He took me to the Social Security Office, and we stopped by the shelter to see if there was any space. Then we went to the grocery store to pick up ingredients for enchiladas. We went to his apartment and he painted while we watched movies.

I was preparing myself for the Shelter.

I shared with him a secret dream I had when I was 13 years old.
In this dream there was a man standing near a tent wearing a hat. This dream gave me the most beautiful loving feeling. This man gave me all Love…which melted me. The hat and the tent were symbolic. When I told him this, he immediately said, the tent represents Courage, Wisdom and Strength.
I then realized the hat was an artist’s beret.

In 2002, I was just completing my 17th year working for a major airline. I also co-owned a small law office that later turned into a lawfirm. I was on the Board of Directors for many organizations and President of several others. These accomplishments started to sound to me like Blah Blah blah…
Did I want my tombstone to say I was head of organizations? I needed to rethink what I was putting my heart and my passion into.

My Daddy called me from El Paso to ask me, “have you seen the Squirrels?” I had huge trees in my backyard, often with squirrels running up and down… so of course I have seen the squirrels. I realized that Daddy was seeing God’s perfect beauty and life manifested in the squirrels… Oh, what an amazing symbol of love, and a wake up call to my senses! My Daddy is so Spiritual… He is so, so humble, he just remains silent when I tell him how Spiritual he is.

I could feel myself becoming ready, guided toward my eventual departure from the corporate world. I knew it would be financially challenging, yet Spiritually Rewarding. I figured it would be about 3 years. It was seven, from the end of corporate occupation to the shelter. My family and friends had been right there next to me when I chose to take this jump from “acceptable society.” They only gave me unconditional love…

I received food, work, clothes and so much Love… I knew they just thought I had lost it, just like I would have thought if I was on the outside looking in. I found that I could accept their misunderstanding of my journey, because I was building a me that I had never met. I was evaporating a Huge Ego…

God touched my eyesight and yes, it is humbling. I now see that it’s okay to ask for help. I now feel I can receive as easily as I can give.

Seven years later, in 2010, my Spiritual Journey ended, and now a new journey is awaiting, in writing this book and understanding society’s need to connect with the pilgrimage of homelessness.

This Shelter took me in after 9 days of staying at CSL. I waited in the front lobby. There were five women being checked in. We all waited patiently for about two to three hours. When I was checked in, I was given a bed to sleep in, in a room with seven other women.

Every morning we were given a 5:30am wake-up call.
We were given breakfast from 6 to 6:30am. Then we had to leave the shelter from 8am to 6:30pm. Joseph would come by and pick me up now and then. We would leave to go to his place where he would read to me, sometimes from the Bible, sometimes just other stories. And we would see movies. During this time, he was my hidden strength, which I would later discover.

The curfew at the shelter was to leave at 8am and be back by 6:30pm. I went to CSL to spend time and feel close to my spiritual family, and to use the computers. Because I had frequented it as a member, I could spend my time this way.

One day seemed no different than the rest, but it was.

It takes two buses and a train to get from the shelter where I was staying to CSL. This day, I missed the bus, but Reverend Marsha offered to give me a ride to the train. When the sun is going down, my vision is weakened. And once it is down, I can only see car headlights. I started my journey to the shelter and noticed that the lighting was getting dim. I called the shelter to tell them I was on my way and was experiencing obstacles, but no one answered the phone.

It was extremely painful being unable to see, unable to make my appointment with the place and the people I was leaning on for shelter, because of my eyesight challenge.

I walked from the Train Station to the Bus with a small cluster of other people, because by now the sun was down, and it was all black except for car headlights. When I reached the Bus Stop, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. I asked someone at the stop to find out if this was the correct bus to take. She told me it was a whole block away. Literally blind at night, I felt with my feet and followed the train rails meticulously slowly, and the passing cars with their headlights gave me light for moments at a time. Finally, I arrived at the Bus, and this bus driver also told me this was not the bus, but said “it’s over there,” and pointed.

I had to say, “if you’re pointing I can’t see where. So verbally tell me where.”

He explained it was caddy-corner to where I was standing, across two streets and traffic. Again, I took a deep breath and started walking.

A few steps away from the bus, a woman came suddenly up to me, and I think she had gotten off the bus to ask if I needed help. I was so thankful, I exclaimed, “YES!” I took her arm, because I couldn’t see anything in front of me. We crossed the street up ahead of us and then turned left and crossed another street. When we crossed the second street, it was a few feet away.

When we got there, I think she motioned to the new bus driver that I was visually challenged, because he showed unusually tender concern for a stranger and asked me what I was going to do when I got off.

I told him that I was going to call 911 because I knew I needed their assistance.
After I was dropped off, I did call the police. They came, but it took 45 minutes because they didn’t usually escort someone like me. My curfew was blown.

Two days later, right after dinner time, I was evicted from the shelter, and told I had to leave no later than the following morning.

I called Reverend Marsha, Joseph, and Susan Teague, a friend of mine from the CSL choir. Reverend Marsha said I could stay at CSL again, and to call her in the morning to be let in.

On Thursday evening, I called Joseph. He said he would be out of town until Saturday, but welcomed me then. Then I called Susan, and she asked me what time I needed to be picked up.

They all said “Yes” to me.

When I came to the shelter, I had brought with me a laptop computer that had been given to me by Paul Villeux, the President of the Dallas Chapter of the American Council of the Blind. When leaving the shelter, I asked for my laptop at the front desk, and they could not find it. It was a wonderful computer, because it has HUGE letters and a voice that talks to you. They lost my precious computer!! I felt like no one would listen to a homeless person, and that my rights were now disappearing.

I now knew why I was at the Shelter… There are so many people labeled homeless who have no rights. This concept of writing the book was practically landing in my lap. I have an obligation to open the eyes and hearts of individuals to the pilgrimage of homelessness, and to create a Pilgrim Foundation Art Gallery, as an extension of the reaching hands of society into these areas.

My book will be titled “Evicted From A Homeless Shelter.”

Joseph’s paintings and artwork will be in the book. I am communicating with
a grant writer to bring in the money to open a non-profit gallery for pilgrims, so they will be able to sell their work.

Years ago, in 2003, I began shedding the “Mexican Catholic” armor that protected me. I am extremely proud of my heritage, however when it came to religion, I was taught not to ask questions, but to focus respect on the institution rather than the truth. My friend Lynnda Wasiak introduced me me to Neale Donald Walsch’s book, “Conversations With God, Part One” in 1995. I read the first few pages and it didn’t really agree with what I had been raised to believe, and so it didn’t impress me. It didn’t make sense that we could talk directly to God, when the custom I was brought up with in the Catholic Church was to seek a priest to speak with God.

By 2005, I now had cleansed, evolved into a woman who was ready and open for anything that God would bring me to…
My mind, spirit, heart, body was open to what? My journey that began in 2003 had now learned how to Surrender…I was the Marketing Director for a Dance Company. In this dance studio there was a man who was building a room upstairs… When I met him, I noticed he had a canteen around his neck with Water and crystals in it. Prior to that, it had been blessed in the sun.

I found out he was a dancer at a studio in the Dallas/Fort Worth area two years ago.
He was going to Los Angels to become a model, however once he got to California, he was whisked away with the Neale Donald Walsh Group that was headed to Colorado for their Retreat.(Dallas Observer, 1995, Quinn Eaker) The Dallas Observer gave him the Front Cover and a 7 page story.

Quinn guided me on Consciousness, Awareness, the moment and the Universe.

He gave me words I never knew or used in my vocabulary. He spoke to me about the book, “Conversations With God.” In it, there must be something that I was missing. This time I was ready to understand what this book was saying.

When I started having the Eyesight Challenges, his mother took me to a Health Store and bought me what I needed…

Later I was to find out his mother was Barb Lundgren… Still I didn’t know who she was… she is a modern day pioneer in the field of homeschooling and unschooling, which is the education of youth by means that reside outside the everyday paradigm. She just held a three-day International Conference called Rethinking Everything here in Dallas during September, 2010. When Joseph and I went to her three-day convention, I focused on a class given by Quinn on Cobb Housing. He was inspiring us about building our own homes for $1,500, with clay, sand, hay and water… His concept was to build a self-sufficient community. There would be fresh running water, foods grown from the earth, electricity we could build. Google Cobb Housing, and you might enjoy seeing what’s beginning here.

In 2007, Isabell Rosignol, owner of a successful Dallas marketing firm, said “Think higher, Trish.” Didn’t quite know what that meant.
Later I kept hearing this..

As we discussed, I am changing the word “homeless” to “pilgrim,” based on a conversation with Brother Chi Sing who is the Founder of the new Dallas Meditation Center.

Today, we are preparing to have “The Works of Joseph Townson” presented on December 3rd, at the Center for Spiritual Living. The Studio is now operating, where Joseph is teaching weekly Painting Workshops. I am still in the midst of laying the foundation for my book, “Evicted From a Homeless Shelter”, with Joseph as the artist, and we plan to open a non-profit gallery for Pilgrims to bring their creative visions and artwork to sell, so they will have money to buy food, housing and clothing. We then will look into making a movie…

We are also have Rental Space for like minded and mindful living,
like Massage, Reiki, Body Works, acupuncture, vocal, guitar, and flute lessons…

We are here in this lifetime to do what? If it is just to give Love to anyone you spend a monent with, then this is what it is..
Or the farmer who grows his crop to feed the world, then so it is…
Or listening to a person who wants to be heard, then so it is…
What makes you feel good?
We want to connect pilgrims into society.

We are taking just one step at a time.

On October 25th, 2010 at 9am, I went to my computer to complete the Story to send to the Holistic Networker for online publication… When I opened my e-mail I had received an email from my sister. She didn’t have my new cell phone number; so far, my dad was the only one in El Paso who had my number.

The email said, “Daddy passed away at 5am.”
My Daddy, who would call me up from El Paso, and asked me, “Have you
seen the Squirrels”, would never call me by phone again.

Here was my Daddy who gave unconditional love to everyone.
My Daddy who labeled no one, was physically no longer here.
My Daddy who said only kind words about everyone…

He planted millions of seeds to grow beautiful beginnings…
My Daddy has now transitioned to be with his own mom, dad, 2 brothers,
2 sisters, and all of your close ones who have transitioned…
We are the perfect manifestations of God…
Daddy is now with those who have transitioned before him…
And he is teaching them how to play poker!

He was 85 years , born November 16, 1924…

He was in his wife’s arms of 34 years when he left.
By his hospital bed were my sister and brother in law.
Thirty four years ago, Daddy blessed my sister and I by
marrying a woman who had 9 children… Thirty four years ago
we blended into a huge family…

So I now see squirrels as precious energies… God miracles, running up and down the trees playfully…
I see the squirrels as life, love… Living the Moment, free to play, free to run, free to be…

Thank you Daddy… We will be with each other forever…..
Love, Patsy
