Who inspires you? I have been thinking a lot about inspiration lately. Inspiring people help motivate us to expand our minds about what is possible. We remind ourselves that if they can do it, then so can we. I have always loved the statement in Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” about believing 6 impossible things before breakfast.
A few months ago I was reading an article in the Journal of Longevity about Jack LaLanne, who is known as America’s number one physical fitness expert. At 91, he looks fantastic and is in incredible physical shape. He works out two hours each day, 7 days a week, eats a nutritionally well-balanced diet of protein, fruits and vegetables, and he takes about 40 to 50 supplements a day. More incredibly, he has not eaten any dessert since 1929!
I find his example of self-discipline and the fact that he says he never thinks about age to be so inspiring. Research has shown that if people continue to exercise that they can maintain their muscular strength. Certainly Jack LaLanne is proof that this is true.
Recently I was talking to my father and he said, “I think it is important in life to live up to one’s potential”. I agree with him. I believe we all have enormous potential and that hard work and self-discipline do pay off. Our bodies are our vehicles and I encourage you to do all that you can to keep yours running in the best condition. There are many resources and people available to help you on your journey. I hope you will find what works best for you. Maybe you will become an inspiration to others and help show us all just how much is possible.
