Do you have a sense that you’ve lived before? Have you had an out-of-body or near-death experience? Have you had a dream with a departed loved one? Or perhaps you’ve seen an inner light or heard an inner sound.
If you’ve had any of these experiences or others, you’re one of the 66% of North Americans who say that they’ve had at least one spiritual experience.
A spiritual experience can be something as simple as a “coincidence,” a recurring dream, or something more prominent such as a past life recall. All spiritual experiences have one thing in common; each spiritual experience has a significant meaning for the person having the experience.
Why do we have spiritual experiences? They are a gift from God to help us understand the purpose of life, our personal mission. These experiences help us remember what we came here to learn in this lifetime.
Spiritual experiences often slip quietly into our lives, so quietly that we often don’t realize we are having them. Dreams are an example.
“Dreams are a starting point for many who wish to begin the spiritual journey to God and do it in the easiest possible way. Dreams taught me to face myself, let me see the future, and took me to the heavens of God.” ? – Harold Klemp, Touching the Face of God, p. 116
Dreams are one of the many ways Divine Spirit uses to teach us about ourselves and who we truly are—Soul.
On the surface, dreams are often confusing and make little sense to our rational mind. It’s like learning any new language. You need to recognize the symbols and then learn what they mean. Unfortunately, books on dream symbols won’t work for most people, at least not for very long. Each of us dreams with symbols that have personal significance to us, the dreamer. To really understand the guidance we are given in our dreams, we need to study them.
I found that keeping a dream journal really helps me decipher my dreams. I also started my own dream dictionary to help me understand what my dream symbols mean to me. For example, I know that whenever I dream of tornadoes, sudden change is headed my way. I can tell how big the change is by the size of the tornado. The shade of the tornado tells me whether it’s something that I can sidestep or if it’s something that I need to experience. The events in the dream leading up to the tornado also give me clues about what aspect of my life—job, family, spiritual life—is about to change. And interwoven in the dream is guidance about how to handle that change.
And I learned all this over time by keeping a dream journal and studying my dreams. Through keeping this journal over time, I am getting better at understanding the guidance I receive.
